We work closely with manufacturers of materials, designers, building management/maintenance personnel and users/occupants, covering everything from advanced materials technology to design methods and technology, moisture-resistant construction, the indoor environment, acoustics, energy conservation, fire safety, durability and recycling/re-use.
In the information and communication technology (ICT) field, we develop technology for safety, reliability and demanding environments. Our large-scale EMC laboratories are one of northern Europe's most important resources in this sector. Software, environmental durability and radio and antenna technology are also included in our wide range of electronics expertise.
We assist the development of sustainable energy systems. Research and development are aimed at improving the efficiency of energy use in buildings and industry. We are also involved in the development of more efficient and more climate-neutral future energy solutions, based on energy conversion, energy from waste and renewable energy.
Fire and safety are working areas that often involve international cooperation: in this, our fire testing laboratory provides a unique resource. We carry out full-scale trials and research on furniture, fire safety in public environments, safety in tunnels, safety at sea, fire-fighting methods and the collapse of buildings under exceptional circumstances. We analyse risks and evaluate the environment effects of fires and accidents.
We support the competitiveness of foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology companies. Structure and materials design, microbiology, biotechnology, formulation, controlled releases, sensory science and aroma are areas in which we carry out research, develop technology and provide training.
Our particular areas of expertise are chemical analysis, characterisation of materials and surface chemistry. Applications include polymer materials, biomaterials, functional materials and systems for the protection of surfaces. In particular, SP is at the leading edge of research and development in areas such as formulation and controlled release.
Every part of SP's technical activities involves measurements, often highly specialised in terms of both equipment and skills. Through our wide range of working areas, we are in close contact with many different sectors, which in turn gives us unique opportunities for providing many different measurement technology services.
Our work in this area covers on-road and off-road vehicles, machines, rail vehicles, ships, offshore installations, steel structures etc. The main emphasis is on road vehicles, and particularly cars, goods vehicles and buses. Our research includes robust designs, electronics, safety systems, paints, noise, fire and hybrid technology.
SP is involved in the entire chain, from sawmills to furniture, bridges and wooden buildings. Current areas of research include more efficient processing, conversion and utilisation of raw materials, the life of wood products, life cycle costs and construction (construction systems, energy and the indoor environment).
