Wood Technology and Wood in Construction

We develop competence and methodologies for the entire wood mechanics conversion/processing chain from the sawmill to furniture, timber-framed buildings etc. Activities in these fields were substantially strengthened by the merger with Trätek, the industry's sector research institute, in 2004.

Specialised working areas in wood technology and wood construction include methods of measuring and controlling the quality of logs and sawn products, timber drying, durability of wood and paint on wood, adhesives and bonding, wood composites and chemical modification of wood, design rules for wooden structures and fire safety in wooden buildings.

Work is carried out at several of SP's sites. In addition, our facilities in Skellefteå, Stockholm and Växjö work in conjunction with Luleå Institute of Technology, the Royal Institute of Technology and University of Växjö respectively.

We are working in the sphere of the follwing activites

  • Building and housing which purpose is to aim at promoting building in wood for a sustainable society by developing products, processes, designs, methods, regulations and standards that enhance the advantages of using wood in building and housing regarding technology, environment and economy.
  • Processesing and processses This area involves developing techniques and methods to enable sawmills and the timber industry to produce and process their products cost-effectively.
  • Materials and products R&D activities in this area are concentrated on improving the competitiveness of wood materials and wood-based products by enhancing their value, and on assisting the introduction of new products to the market.
