FormulationThe area formulation aim at obtaining a good chemical compatibility and a good colloidal stability of different ingredients in a paint/coating formulation.
The trend to reduce volatile organic compounds (VOC) in paints and coatings provide new and harder demands how to formulate the paint/coating (both water- and solventborne systems) to obtain a good long-time stability. Regulations such as REACH will impose new challenges regarding storage stability, application and levelling. Paint additives used today will not be allowed in the future.
Smaller binder particles (in waterborne systems) with improved film formation and new properties will need to be properly formulated. It will require a good understanding of the paints/coatings shear-, extensional- and viscoelastic properties and how that is affected by the various ingredients and their interactions.
