Renewable motor fuels

Electricity, hydrogen and - particularly - various bio-derived motor fuels seem to be the most important renewable alternative motor fuels available for vehicles. The way in which the markets for these fuels develop will depend on technical advances and on what form possible future restrictions on carbon dioxide emissions take and how they are applied.Biomass will be a limited resource in future energy systems.  It can be used for the production of motor fuels, for heating and to produce electricity, but is not sufficient for all these purposes.  It is therefore important that it should be used as efficiently as possible, in both environmental and cost terms.  We use system analysis tools, such as GET, to model future energy systems and analyse possible scenarios to assess where different forms of energy and energy carriers would have the greatest benefit.  In practical terms, this means that we can, for example, assess the risks, cost efficiency and environmental value of various technologies, such as for renewable motor fuels.

We perform research and development projects for energy system models based on biomass from agriculture, forestry and from waste.  Other research is concerned with the potential for the use of biomass as a resource for motor fuels in a global perspective.

The models that we create can be used for such purposes as bases for deciding on development strategies, choice of technologies, estimates of the cost effectiveness of various technologies, policy decisions and the setting of targets.
