EESI – Improving energy efficiency in the sawmill industry, phase II
The aim of this project is to demonstrate that it is possible to reduce energy use in the sawmill industry by at least 20% per m3 by 2020. A reduction in energy use of 20% throughout the Swedish sawmill industry would generate savings of around 1200 GWh in heat and 300 GWh in electricity. This represents a potential total annual cost saving from energy use of around SEK 390 million, which is about SEK 22 per m3 for sawmills.
The project will be carried out in two phases, with an evaluation between the phases. During 2010 and 2011 the first phase of the project was carried out. Examples of activities conducted in the first phase are:
- Creation of an energy efficiency network of sawmills and research institutes
- Development of a computer model for sawmills with data from the participating sawmills
- Proposal on a number of energy saving measures
Now the work continues in the second phase of the project. In Phase II, some of the energy-saving measures proposed in Phase will be implemented at the sawmills. The measures implemented will subsequently be demonstrated for the participants in the project and other stakeholders. The implemented measures will be followed up with monitoring to verify the achieved energy savings compared to the assumed savings from the design and installation.The results from the monitoring will also be used to update the computer model that was developed in Phase I.
Routines for follow-up measurements and interpretation of the results shall be developed. The routines are meant to be a support of continuous improvement to reduce the energy use in the sawmill industry and thereby enhance the future competitiveness. To further simplify the energy efficiency work a practical energy management systems for sawmills will be developed and implemented.
The knowledge obtained in the project will be disseminated through the demonstrations at the sawmills as well as by internal and external workshops. A comprehensive roadmap will be developed that describes where the sawmill industry should be in about 10 years.
