Tribology
Friction and wear are among the central problems in machines and mechanisms with moving part. Evaulation of the function and safety of a product can include testing and assessment of friction and wear resistance (tribology), for example research on artificial hip joints. Artificial limbs has a limited life due to abraded particles from the insert surfaces, which can have adverse biological effects and contribute to loosening of a artificial knee or hip joint. SP has developed a new method of tribological testing through modification of a pin-on-disc test machine, giving much shorter test cycle times and so assisting product improvements.
