SafeProd

SafeProd is a Swedish research project financed by VINNOVA, the Swedish Agency for Innovation Systems.

The main focus of this research project is to increase the knowledge concerning how to develop complex products, based on hardware software and mechanics, and still maintain a high level of safety. It is not acceptable if the safety level is decreased when for instance a traditional mechanical safety system is changed to a safety system based only on hardware and software.

Safety Life Cycle

For these new types of complex products it is not enough to only show that the product in itself is good enough, it is also necessary to show that the development of the product has followed a certain process (the Safety Life Cycle).

Safety Integrity Level

To help companies in developing these complex products and still be able to maintain the functional safety a number of different standards have been developed for different industry sectors. Common for these new standards is that they introduce the SIL terminology (SIL=Safety Integrity Level).

The aim of SafeProd

The aim of this project is to help companies to apply these new standards by developing guidelines on how to use these standards.

Main focus in the project is on the following standards:

  • IEC 61511 "Functional safety-Safety instrumented systems for the process industry sector"
  • IEC 62061  "Safety of machinery-Electrotechnical aspects"

Both of these standars are sector specific standard based on the basic safety publication in this area:

IEC 61508 Functional safety of electrical/electronic/programmable electronic safety-related systems and because of this many ideas/thoughts from IEC 61508 will also be highlighted in this project.

The SafeProd research project did start at the end of 2003 and will be going on until mid 2006.
