Fires in tunnels
SP works with a number of important tunnel projects. We conduct research on extinguishing systems and we participate in several tests of extinguishing systems in full scale. Detection systems in tunnels become more and more important in tunnels and are also an important research area. We cooperate in a project where different detection systems are tested. We participate also in the Swedish reference group for implementation of the EU road tunnel directive in Sweden. SP is also acting as a consultancy for different fire protection projects in underground constructions.
SP-Fire Technology participates in the EU project L-Surf, Large Scale Underground Research Facility. Goal of the project is to develop collaboration within tunnel fire research in Europe. The project investigates the need and the possibilities to construct a European organisation and infrastructure for research and education within tunnel safety and security research. SP has also during the past years conducted research tasks within the area concrete and tunnels. These projects were sponsored by e.g. the Swedish Rail Administration (Banverket), The Swedish Concrete Association and Skanska Prefab.
SP is also cooperating and planning several project of fire in underground construction through its cooperation with Mälardalens University (MdH) in Västerås where Haukur Ingason is associate professor. At the moment a EU project proposal applied for with participants from MdH, Gävles College and Lund University. The acronym of the project is METRO and other participants are from Hungary. SP has also applied for research funding from the Swedish Rescue Agency for research on fire risks in underground buildings under construction. Further information on tunnel safety and research.
