Information about TB117-2013

Technical Bulletin 117-2013 – Requirements, Test procedure and Apparatus for Testing the Smolder Resistance of Materials Used in Upholstered Furniture.

Why test according to this standard
TB 117-2013 is a test method for assessing smoulder resistance of cover fabrics, barrier materials, resilient filling materials, and decking materials for use in upholstered furniture.

All materials are tested together with standardized foam and fabrics. The end-use material combination is not in the scope of this standard.

Test specimens

Type of product  Number of specimens  Dimensions of specimens
Cover fabric*

203 mm x 203 mm

203 mm x 381 mm

Barrier materials

203 mm x 203 mm

203 mm x 205 mm

Resilient filling material**

203 mm x 127 mm x 51 mm

203 mm x 203 mm x 51 mm

Decking material 2 533 mm x 343 mm x 25 mm

*Cut each specimen with its long dimension in the direction of the warp.
*For loose filling materials, sew bags of the above dimensions using the same ticking to be used in manufacturing the finished piece of furniture.

Short test description
The material to be tested is mounted into a test rig together with the applicable standard material. A glowing cigarette is placed in the junction between the seat and the back in the mock-up assembly. Observations are made to establish the occurrence of any smouldering and/or flaming ignition of the materials. The length of the charring in the assembly is also measured to evaluate compliance.
