Testing volume and flow meters
SP is a Notified Body for type-testing and certification under the Measuring Instruments Directive (2004/22/EC) for fuel meters (petrol and diesel oil pumps), heat meters and water meters.
We also test metering equipment in accordance with OIML R117, and heat meters in accordance with EN 1434.
Regular inspection
Many types of meters in constant use are required to be regularly inspected, with such inspections being performed by accredited companies. Further information on this is available from SWEDAC, and also within SP from our Weights and Measures Department, which is accredited for inspection and adjustment of petrol and oil meters.
Legislation and rules for consumer protection
For many years, almost all countries have had legislation and rules to protect consumers in transactions based on size, volume or weight. In Sweden, these rules have been restricted for some years to apply only to sales to private persons.
Rules for meters
Flow and/or volume meters covered by these rules include those in petrol stations, on road tankers and in water supply or district heating systems. When inspecting petrol dispenser meters, we often check at the same time that the required gas recovery systems are working.
