Increasing the efficiency of food production

SIK helps food industries to review and increase the efficiency of their production. We encourage companies to see the link between increasing efficiency and reducing the impact on the environment. We review your company’s production and recommend solutions which can save both money and reduce the impact of your production on the environment in a life cycle perspective.

We work with several research projects within the area and with companies, universities and colleges all around the world. This professional interaction provides us with advanced knowledge which your company benefits from when you hire us. A good example is the REELIV project. In this project we are developing tools which combine environmental system analysis with the simulation of production flow. The result is low resource consumption and more efficient production. A long list of Swedish companies are participating in the project.

Some practical examples
• Arla Foods dairy in Linköping has reduced waste drastically and could at the same time increase the number of products.
• Dairies, through using ozone gas instead of hot water, can save large amounts of energy. This reduces the use of environmentally harmful chemicals.
• Using infrared heating allows bakeries to shorten process times and save energy. SIK has been developing IR technology since the middle of the 1990’s and is at the forefront in the area.
