Formaldehyde certification
SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden is an approved partner for certifying products involving formaldehyde-emitting materials. Companies that need an approval in accordance with the CARB rules can therefore turn to SP for help with the certification process. Climate chamber methods for determination of formaldehyde are carried out according the american standards ASTM E1333 and ASTM D 6007.
The CARB regulation states that each manufacturer that produces material for the Californian market must fulfil the ATCM 93120 regulation. This means that the emission of formaldehyde must be below the applicable standard and that a third party certifier (TPC) must work together with the manufacturer. The applicable standard depends on material (Particle board, Plywood or MDF).
Two phases are included in the regulation; the first is applied 1 Jan 2009. SP is an approved TPC actor and supports factories. Material suppliers to the furniture industry (IKEA) also fall within the California regulation and can be supported by SP.
We can also supply emission chambers for the industry. Two types are available. The 1m3
chamber operating under ASTM D 6007 or EN 717-1, and a “production control pack” consisting of small 1-12 automatic chambers running under ASTM D 6007.
