Fracture mechanics

For welded constructions, or those having stress concentrations, it is sometimes important to verify the ability of the material to continue to carry its load in the presence of cracks or stress raisers. This can be done by fracture mechanics testing.

We perform linear and non-linear fracture mechanics testing in accordance with both American (ASTM) and British (BS) standards. K1C testing is used for linear fracture mechanics, with CTOD, KEE and J1C being used for non-linear testing. Tests can be performed at room temperature and at low temperatures.

We can assist with the selection of samples, and our workshop is well equipped for the preparation of test pieces. We have methods of positioning the crack front in specific positions for testing welded test pieces.
