Products where gas is used as an energy source has to fulfil the requirements in EU Directive 90/396/EEC (Gas Appliance Directive). SP tests and certifies gas appliances in relation to this directive. The requirements mainly concern safety characteristics, but also emissions as well as energy efficiency. There is a large variety of gas appliances, e.g. cookers, barbeques, infra heaters, lanterns and absorption refrigerators. Also single components with are significant for the safety of the appliance have to be separately certified. The certification is valid for specific gas qualities, e.g. LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) or natural gas of a certain family. The reason is that the characteristics of different energy gases vary considerably.
