Heat Pumps

RISE has extensive experience of technical evaluation of heat pumps. In fact, RISE (former SP) was the first laboratory in Europe accredited for testing heat pumps. We test and review various types of heat pumps, both in the field and in our laboratory. RISE is an active participant in standardisation work, both nationally and internationally, with extensive knowledge of current and future requirements for technical evaluation.
Testing and Resources

Our laboratory is equipped to perform tests of essentially any heat pump system. Several climate chambers are available, of different sizes for which the temperature and humidity can be varied and controlled.

We perform tests for such parties as heat pump manufacturers, selling agents, the Swedish Energy Agency’s Testlab.
We test:

  • Air-to-air heat pumps
  • Air-to-water heat pumps
  • Ground source heat pumps (GSHP)
  • Exhaust air heat pumps
  • Direct-expansion heat pumps
  • Air dehumidifiers
  • Water heaters
  • Refrigerated display cabinets
  • Field measurements of heat pumps

We perform tests and examinations for multiple national and international certification schemes. For more information on testing methods, visit our website in the left margin, Standards and methods for testing of heat pumps”.

Certified products

For information on P-marking heat pumps, HARP, NF-PAC, EHPA Quality Label for heat pumps and Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) for heat pumps, visit the websites on the right margin. More information can be found on our website in the left margin, “Standards and methods for testing of heat pumps”.

Results from conducted tests

For information on heat pumps that have been tested, and for which the results have been published, see Råd & Rön (available only in Swedish) and the Swedish Energy Agency in the right margin under “See also”.

Research and development

RISE is managing and has managed, a number of research projects in the heat pump field. Examples of projects are: Improving operational safety of heat pumps used for domestic heating (“Förbättrad driftsäkerhet hos villavärmepumpar/Improved reliability of Swedish residential heat pump systems”). Future demands on heat pumps (“Nästa generations värmepumpssystem i bostäder och lokaler/Next-generation heat pump systems in residential buildings and commercial premises”). Overall energy optimisation of heat pumps and refrigerating equipment. (Metod och guidelines för fastställande av nyckeltal för energieffektivitet vid fältmätninngar av värmepumpar och luftkonditioneringsaggregat/Method and guidelines to establish System Efficiency Index during field measurements on air conditioning and heat pump systems). Investigating problems associated with frosting and defrosting of evaporators exposed to air (e.g. ”Frosting and defrosting of air coils - results from laboratory testing")
