Rock Mechanical Testing

As infrastructure projects grow, there is a demand for higher degree of use of the rock material in order to keep the construction costs low with still preserving the safety. More accurate computational models simulating the mechanical behaviour, which can be used during the planning, require detailed knowledge of the properties of various rock materials.

The rock mechanics laboratory at SP has equipment for rock mechanical tests that for certain parts is unique for Sweden. The equipment makes it possible to conduct tests all the way from pure material tests, in conjunction with infrastructure projects to pure research.

SP is just now being commissioned to conduct a large test programme for Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Co (SKB) concerning advanced rock characterization, where one part contains mechanical testing, in conjunction with site investigations for the planning of nuclear waste storage facilities. SKB has asked for new knowledge of the mechanical properties as the project progress. SP has developed some of the existing test methods in order to obtain new types of and improved results.

SP can offer testing according to various methods. Besides this, there are possibilities to carry out customised tests as there is a wide range of equipment and a great knowledge of mechanical testing within the various laboratories.
