Seat belts

That vehicles today will be designed for crash safety is taken for granted. As one element of such safety provision, seat belts are therefore subject to requirements in a wide range of aspects.

We test seat belts, mechanisms and buckles by exposure to high temperatures, dust, salt solutions and other environmental parameters, in order to simulate conditions that can be encountered in vehicles. Belts and mechanisms are life-tested by repeated extractions and returns, while buckles are tested by a large number of engagements and releases. SP also performs static tensile tests of the belts, mechanisms and buckles, as well as full-scale crash tests.

SP tests vehicle seat belts in accordance with ECE R16, EU Directive no. 77/541/EEC and FMVSS 209.
