The method measures the damaged length of material in passenger and crew compartments of the aircraft. The requirements are outlined in FAA Regulations (The Federal Aviation Administration), Part 25, Section 25.853 - Airworthiness Standard: Transport Category Airplanes, Appendix F - Party 1.

||4 specimens in each material direction with dimensions 75 mm x 305 mm and maximum thickness 3 mm|
The test takes place in a specified test chamber in which the specimen is mounted vertically. The exposed surface of the material is facing down towards the flame. The material is brought against the gas flame. The following is recorded, how far the material burns and how long it takes for the flames to spread the material. The result (burn rate) is expressed in mm / min.
The method is identical to the JAR 25.853.
