SP Chemistry, Materials and Surfaces
The Department of Chemistry, Materials and Surfaces offers expertise in organic and inorganic analytical chemistry as well as in a broad spectrum of areas within materials technology.

On January 1st 2013, YKI, Institute for Surface Chemistry and SP’s existing Chemistry and Materials business merged to form a new unit within the SP Group – SP Chemistry, Materials and Surfaces. The merger means that YKI will no longer exist as a stand-alone company, but will continue with business as usual in Stockholm. |
Together with our colleagues at other units at SP, we have competence that covers all aspects of the life cycle of a material. We provide our clients with solutions to their problems, damage analyses, tailor-made and standardised tests, and evaluations.
Furthermore, we are involved in a large number of research projects, often in collaboration with industry, institutes, and academia. We are active in areas such as organic and inorganic analysis (main component, components, and trace element), surface characterisation, environmental analysis, as well as characterisation and testing of polymeric, metallic and ceramic materials, surface coatings, corrosion protection products, and materials for information storage.
We carry out basic and applied research in the following program areas:
