RISE – Sweden’s new super-institute

Pia SandvikThe RISE institutes SP, Swedish ICT and Innventia are merging in order to create a unified institute sector and become a stronger innovation partner for businesses and society. At the end of the year we will change our name to RISE. Pia Sandvik is President of the new umbrella institute.

Pia Sandvik has excellent insight into SP from her work as a RISE board member since 2009.

“What is most inspiring with this assignment is to be able to develop the potential of the new RISE. We truly have the possibility of delivering added benefit to our customers,” she says.

“For most of my professional life I have switched between research and the business sector, and that’s something I enjoy. Sweden’s strategy for new industrialisation is currently in strong focus, and for me RISE has an obvious role to play in this implementation in several areas, not least test-beds. This is an area in which we will show our skills.”

New services

As a customer or partner of SP or one of our subsidiaries, no significant differences will be noticed. At least, not initially. All our operations will continue as before, although we will change our name. In the longer term, of course, the aim is that the new RISE should provide both coordination synergies and develop new services that benefit our customers. Above all via a broader-based offer with additional services under one roof, and with clearer paths to the institute services. This is something that is in demand primarily among small and medium-sized companies.

“Small and medium-sized companies are immensely important to growth in Sweden, but they often find it more difficult to find an entry point to research and development. RISE is accustomed to helping customers define their problems and with our broad competence base, we can work across almost the entire Technology Readiness Level scale. In other words, we’re better equipped than many other actors to provide useful support in the development of small and medium-sized companies,” says Pia Sandvik.

Head office in Gothenburg

The new head office will be located in Gothenburg.

“Western Sweden is one of Sweden’s most important industrial and research clusters. With more than 1100 employees in this region, it felt natural for the new RISE to establish its head office in Gothenburg,” notes Pia Sandvik.

The process of creating the new RISE will take place gradually over the coming years, but at the end of the year we will change our name to RISE. All customers who may be affected by any aspect of the change, for instance as regards agreements, will be informed well in advance.
