The iRIS-project 2016 - 2018The iRIS-project (Intelligent Risk Identification System for safer mines), funded by EIT RawMaterials, aims to further develop and implement tools and systems to identify vehicle-related fire risks in mining environments. If the risks are identified early, and experiences from other sites and sectors are used, some of the vehicle related fires could be avoided.
Only in Sweden the estimated costs for mine fires are €2.000.000 per year. The aim of the project is to reduce the vehicle related fires with 20 % within a five-year period. The consortium consists of strategic participants including mining companies, fire and IT researchers, IT developers and SME’s performing fire inspections.
An existing tool (in TRL5) will be up-scaled, further developed and integrated in a superior system for effective collective experience management and statistics. The fully integrated system will be a valuable resource for future industrial PhD and applied research projects and the knowledge and results will be integrated in higher education and further education of professionals. The system and its parts will be licensed and create business opportunities for the project partners, SME’s as sub-suppliers for the mining industry, with the large benefit of contributing to a safer, more sustainable and more cost-effective mine.
The project includes a feasibility study, optimization of system content, design and further development of the system and implementation and evaluation in mining environments.
The work in iRIS is divided into six Work Packages (WPs) which address different aspects of the studied topic. The six WPs are:
WP0 – Feasibility Study
WP1 – Project Management
WP2 – Optimization of the technical vehicle and fire related content of the system
WP3 – Specification of requirements on IT-system architecture
WP4 – Development of software
WP5 – System test and evaluation
