Information about SS 02 48 23 (NT Fire 004)

Test method Heat and smoke production according to SS 02 48 23 (NT FIRE 004).

Main field of application

The test method was previously used to classify building products according to "Boverkets Allmänna råd 1993:2 Utgåva 2" after testing. The classes were surface layer class I, II or III, where class I was the best class.

Building materials are no longer classified according to this test method and it is not possible to use the test report as the basis for an application of type approval.

The test method has been replaced with Euroclasses (EN 13501-1). However, NT FIRE 004 is still used commonly among industries for internal control and in some cases as third party production inspections.

The test method measures a surface products ability to produce heat and smoke during a room fire.

Examples of products that can be tested with this method

Gypsum wallboards, particle boards, wall paper, paint systems, insulation boards with surface materials.

Description of test procedure 

The test takes place inside a test chamber, simulating a room fire. In the test chamber, the product is mounted against three walls and in the ceiling. The test chamber is sealed and the product is exposed to a gas flame. The test continues for 5 or 10 minutes and during this time temperature and smoke density are measured.
