Fire testing of materials and components for trains - EN 45545-2

EN 45545-2 defines a classification system that specifies requirements for fire behavior of materials and products used in trains.

The system has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 256 "Railway applications" on behalf of the European Commission and is based on the requirements of the EU Directive 2008/57/EC.

EN 45545-2 classifies all material on board in different groups which have to fulfill specific “Requirement Sets” which often includes several test methods. The test methods included in each Requirements Set are shown in the picture below (click on picture for larger).

RISE Safety (Fire Research) is a member of the standardization group SIS/TK 254 "Railways". SIS/TK 254 compiles Sweden's comments to the working group CEN/TC 256/JWG that develops standards regarding fire safety for trains on behalf of the EU.

EN 45545-2:2013 replaces CEN/TS 45545-2:2009 and shall be given the status of a national standard, at the latest in September 2013. Conflicting national standards must be withdrawn at the latest in March 2016. Requirement sets differ somewhat between EN 45545-2:2013 and former CEN/TS 45545-2:2009, see table.

If listed products are used in an application below the mass and area thresholds given by 4.3 “Grouping Rules”, they may be treated as non-listed products.

 

 

 

 

Amendment for EN 45545-2 has been published. EN 45545-2:2013+A1:2015 supersedes EN 45545-2:2013.

 

Changes are the following:

  • References made to EN 45545-5:2013+A1:2015
  • A product meeting a requirement at the maximum testable thickness shall be considered to comply with the requirement at greater thicknesses
  • Exterior ducts connected to the interior of the vehicle shall be tested according to R1 instead of R7 as stated in EN 45545-2:2013
  • Printed circuit boards shall be tested with all varnishes applied
  • Intermediate layers of a floor composition that do not form part of the assembly due to the thickness limit in the test method shall be tested according to R10 instead of R17 as described in EN 45545-2:2013
  • Specimens of thickness up to 12.5 mm shall be backed with a sheet of non-combustible insulating board when tested according to EN ISO 5659-2
